The lesson
A prototype is a rough, working version of your design. You build it fast, not to keep, but to test. When you test it against your design criteria, you find out exactly what works and what doesn't. That's called iterative design: build, test, find the weak point, improve, then test again. You repeat the loop several times, and each version should beat the one before it.
Zara's first bridge prototype held 2 kg before the joints came apart, even though the beams stayed solid. She kept the beam design and only changed how the joints were glued. Version two held 4 kg before it failed.
When something fails, don't throw the whole design away. Find the exact part that failed, change only that part, and test again. That way you know your fix actually worked.
Each version should beat the last, because you tested it, found the real weakness, and fixed only that.
