A hyphen is the short dash in words like 'well-known' or 'man-eating'. It joins two words so they act as a single describing word. Where you put a hyphen, or whether you use one at all, can completely change what a sentence means.
Without the hyphen, 'a man eating shark' sounds like a man who is eating shark meat for dinner. Add the hyphen, 'a man-eating shark', and now it's a dangerous shark that eats people. Same words, opposite picture.
Hyphens also help with prefixes like 're-'. 'Recover' means to get better or get something back. 're-cover' means to put a new cover on something, like re-covering a chair with new fabric. The hyphen keeps the two meanings apart.
Describing words can have three parts too. Before a noun, join every part with a hyphen: 'a four-year-old boy', 'an up-to-date timetable'. Notice how 'year' stays singular inside the hyphens. When the same describing words sit after the noun, the hyphens drop away: 'the boy is four years old', 'the timetable is up to date'.
When a describing word sits right before a noun, like 'well-known author' or 'five-year-old dog', join it with a hyphen. If the same words come after the noun, like 'the author is well known', you usually drop the hyphen.
