Images and Charts as Argument
A photograph is cropped, a chart has an axis, a caption tells the reader what to see. Each of those is an argument made without a sentence, and each can be checked the way a sentence can.

Every photo and chart in an article is making a case, not decorating the page. Start with the caption, because it tells you what the writer wants you to conclude. Then test the image alone: could it support that conclusion by itself. A photo of one flooded street cannot prove a whole city flooded. A caption claiming more than the picture shows is doing the arguing, not the evidence.
Charts persuade through settings you barely notice. Look at the axis first: does it start at zero, or is it cut off to stretch a small gap into a huge one. Then check the scale: equal steps must mean equal distances, so a bar twice as tall should mean twice as much. A soaring line may flatten once the axis starts at zero. When a chart bends these rules, name the trick out loud.
The form and the frame argue too. Line graphs stress change over time, bars invite ranking, and pies stress shares of a whole, and each choice can flatter a point. A pie cut into twelve thin slices may hide that one slice dominates. Photos argue by cropping: a tight cheerful crowd can hide empty seats, and one lone bear hides the population data. Always ask what sits just outside the frame.
Run three checks on any visual. Does the caption conclude more than the image shows. Does the axis start at zero with honest steps. Could the cropped-out part flip the meaning. If the missing part could reverse the reading, treat the image as a hint, not proof.
