Integrate multimedia and visual displays into presentations with intent: choose clips, images, charts and sound that clarify information, strengthen claims and evidence, and add interest rather than decoration
What a learner can do afterwards
- Choose a chart or image because it makes a specific claim clearer, and say so when presenting
- Place a short clip or audio at the exact point in a talk where it strengthens the argument
- Cut a flashy visual that does not support the message (e.g. dropping an animation that distracts from the data)
The lesson
You already know how to build a presentation with slides, pictures, and clips. Now ask a sharper question about each one: what job does it do? A picture, chart, or sound clip should make a claim clearer or prove a point with evidence. If it does not do that, it does not belong on the slide.
Priya is presenting about food waste in the cafeteria. She has a photo of the overflowing compost bin. She does not open with it. She saves it for the exact moment she says, '40 pounds of food get thrown out every week,' so the picture backs up that number instead of just decorating her opening.
Before you present, ask about every image, animation, or sound: does this help my audience understand my point? If the answer is no, even if it looks cool, cut it. A bouncing logo or a random sound effect pulls attention away from your evidence.
Picking the right chart isn't enough. Say out loud what it proves, like 'this chart shows recycling went up every year.' That sentence tells your audience exactly why the image is there.
Every clip, image, or chart should prove a claim or make it clearer, and you should say out loud what it proves; if it doesn't do either job, cut it.
