When you perform a play script or a poem out loud, the words are only half the story. Your voice and body carry the rest. Volume, pace, tone, and pauses tell the audience how a character feels or what a poem means. Even staying silent and still can say something.
Amara is performing a poem about a storm. On the calm lines, she speaks slowly and softly. When the storm hits, she speeds up and raises her volume, then pauses before the last line to let it land. The audience feels the storm build because of her pace and pauses, not just her words.
Silence and stillness are performance tools too. A pause before a big line, or standing completely still, can hold an audience's attention as much as a loud voice does.
