The lesson
When someone talks to you, plays a video, or shows you a chart, they are sharing information. A summary tells the main points in your own words, without extra details. You already know how to paraphrase a sentence. Summarizing means doing that for a whole talk, video, or chart, and picking out only the most important parts.
Mr. Lee plays a two-minute video about recycling. Instead of retelling every fact, Priya says: 'The video explained why recycling helps the planet and showed three items you can recycle at home.' She picked the main message and left out small details, like the narrator's name.
Before you speak, ask yourself: what are the two or three biggest points? Skip small details, like exact numbers or side comments, unless someone asks for them.
A good summary shares the main message of a talk, video, or chart in a few of your own sentences, not every detail.
