Where Your Things Are Actually Made
A single product is usually assembled from parts made in a dozen countries, chosen for wage rates, tariffs and shipping times. Following one object backwards is the fastest way to see the world economy as a map.

Your phone crossed more borders than you have. Chips from one country, screens from another, assembly in a third, all timed to arrive together. Trace any gadget back through three countries and note what each stage added. The label hides a whole map.
Firms split production because each place does the stage it does best or cheapest, from parts to assembly to shipping. Every economy asks what gets made, how, and for whom. Firms answer by picking spots where workers, resources, laws, and buyers line up best.
Long chains snap when one link fails, from a blocked port to a missing chip, and then shelves empty and prices jump. Governments also tax imports, limit amounts, or set rules foreign sellers must meet. These barriers protect local jobs but tangle supply chains.
Countries trade more when deals and rules lower the barriers between them. Trade agreements cut import taxes, set shared standards, and settle disputes before shipments freeze. Supply chain managers then plan the flow of parts, stock, and information so goods arrive on time and costs stay low.
