More than 3,500 years ago, an Egyptian scribe named Ahmes copied out a scroll full of math problems. We call it the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus. It holds about 84 problems, and scribes used it to work out area, volume, and fractions.

One problem on the papyrus asks how to share 1 loaf of bread evenly among 3 people. Each person's share is 1/3, one part out of three equal parts. That is a unit fraction, something you already know.

Another problem gives a square field with sides 10 units long. Ahmes worked out the area the same way you would today: multiply the side by itself. 10 times 10 equals 100 square units. Farmers used this method to plan their crops.

Scribes could also run the method backwards. If a square field covered 25 square units, they asked which number times itself gives 25. Trying small numbers does the trick: 4 times 4 is 16, too small, and 5 times 5 is 25. So each side of that field is 5 units long.

Egyptian engineers also lined up huge stone monuments with high accuracy. The four sides of the Great Pyramid point toward true north, the exact direction of the North Pole, and they are off by less than 0.05 degrees. To get this right, surveyors watched the stars at night and used a plumb line, a string with a weight that hangs straight down, to keep walls perfectly vertical.

Egyptian doctors wrote down what they knew too. The Ebers Papyrus, another long scroll, describes the human body in detail and lists hundreds of remedies for illnesses, from stomach trouble to skin problems. Some of it reads like a spell, but much of it comes from careful observation of the body.

Egypt's scribes solved real math problems, its surveyors aligned monuments to true north with barely any error, and its doctors recorded detailed medical knowledge, all more than 3,500 years ago.
