Your second language is a head start on your third. Words that look alike across related languages are called cognates, and they hand you hundreds of meanings on day one: a Spanish speaker meeting Italian already guesses that words ending in -cion often end in -zione. But old habits can mislead, because false friends look familiar yet mean something else, so check meanings instead of trusting every lookalike.
Learn to separate transfer from interference. Transfer helps: roots and affixes travel, so knowing that scrib means write unpacks describe, prescribe, and inscription, plus their cousins in French or Spanish. Interference harms: if your first language puts adjectives before nouns, Spanish word order feels backwards at first. Keep two columns, what transferred and what interfered, and that honest list tells you where to spend next week.
Study in a loop: notice a pattern, test it by speaking, get corrected, and try again. Short daily sessions beat one long weekend session, because sleep locks in what you practiced. Use new words within a day or lose them: say them, write them, teach them. Ten words used in real sentences beat fifty words merely recognized on a list.
Keep a small notebook of transfer wins and interference traps, and review it before each session. Read a little above your level, guess unknown words from context before reaching for a dictionary, and ask a speaker to correct you on the spot.
