The lesson
You already know what a half and a quarter are. Now you will use them on real shapes, like a round pizza or a rectangle chocolate bar. The big rule stays the same: every piece has to be the exact same size.
Dad cuts a rectangle chocolate bar into four equal strips to share with four kids. Each strip is the same size, so each one is a quarter. Four quarters put together make the whole bar.
Not sure if the pieces are equal? Try the fold test. Fold the shape so the pieces line up. If they match exactly, they are real halves or quarters.
Two equal pieces are called halves, four equal pieces are called quarters or fourths, and the pieces must always match in size.
