Four-digit numbers run from 1,000 to 9,999. Each digit has its own place: thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones. The digit in the thousands place tells you which group of a thousand the number belongs to. 10,000 has five digits.
Try it together
Look at 3,452. The 3 is in the thousands place, so this number is in the 3,000s. In expanded form, that's 3,000 + 400 + 50 + 2.
To place a number on a 0 to 10,000 line, look at the thousands digit first. It tells you which thousand-sized space to land in. Then use the rest of the digits to nudge closer to one end or the other.
The thousands digit shows which group of 1,000 a number belongs to, and the other digits fine-tune exactly where it falls.
