Communicate with mathematical precision: use correct vocabulary, specify units, and use symbols accurately
What a learner can do afterwards
- Use the = sign correctly to mean 'is the same as' rather than 'the answer is'
- Include units when giving a measurement answer (e.g. '12 cm' not just '12')
- Use precise terms such as 'edge', 'vertex', 'face' when describing 3-D shapes, and 'greater than', 'less than' when comparing numbers
The lesson
In maths, the exact words and marks you use help everyone understand you straight away. The sign = means 'is the same as'. It does not mean 'here comes the answer'. So '3 + 2 = 5' tells us that 3 + 2 is the same amount as 5.
Ben measured his book and said '20'. His friend asked, '20 what?' Next time, Ben said '20 centimetres', and everyone understood him straight away.
When you talk about a 3-D shape, use the exact names. A face is a flat side, an edge is where two faces meet, and a vertex is a corner point. These words help everyone picture the same shape as you.
