The lesson
Exact words make your maths thinking clear. Instead of 'a number that divides in,' say factor. Instead of 'a wide angle,' say obtuse angle. The right word tells everyone exactly what you mean, with no guessing.
A factor of a number divides into it exactly, with nothing left over. 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12 are all factors of 12. A multiple is what you get when you multiply a number by a whole number, so 12, 24, and 36 are multiples of 12. A prime number has exactly two factors: 1 and itself.
Zara measures a rectangle 6 cm by 8 cm and writes its area as 48 cm², not just 48. The little 2 shows the answer covers a flat, two-dimensional space measured in square centimetres.
5² means 5 squared, or 5 x 5 = 25. 5³ means 5 cubed, or 5 x 5 x 5 = 125. Angles have exact names too: acute is less than 90°, right is exactly 90°, obtuse is more than 90°. A regular hexagon has six equal sides; an irregular one does not.
Use the exact word, like factor, multiple, prime, squared, or obtuse, and always attach the correct unit, like cm² or cm³, to your answer.
