Math has patterns you can use as shortcuts. One of the biggest is place value. Each digit sits in its own column, so adding hundreds only lands in the hundreds column. The tens and ones stay just as they were.
Look at 412 + 300 = 712. Only the hundreds digit changed, from 4 to 7. The 12 stayed exactly the same, because adding hundreds never touches the tens or ones.
Times tables come in pairs. 6 x 7 = 42 and 7 x 6 = 42, because turning an array on its side does not change how many dots it holds. Division belongs to the same family: 42 / 7 = 6 and 42 / 6 = 7. Knowing one fact gives you the other three.
You can sort shapes by their sides and angles. A rectangle always has 4 sides, 4 right angles, and 2 pairs of parallel sides. A triangle has only 3 sides and no parallel sides at all.
Numbers, facts, and shapes all have structure. Spot the pattern and the answer, or the group, gets easier to find.
