Knowing When a Feeling Needs Help

Low mood and anxiety are ordinary until they stop you doing things you care about for weeks. Telling the difference, and knowing what help actually looks like, is information most people get too late.

What a learner can do afterwards

  • Name the signals that a low patch has become something worth getting help with
  • Describe what happens at a first appointment, so the unknown stops being a reason not to go
  • Say one thing you can do for a friend in that position and one thing that is not yours to carry

Everyone hits low patches, but some lows change character. Watch duration and spread. Sadness most days for weeks, joy draining out of things you used to like, sleep or appetite shifting hard, energy gone, thoughts turning bleak about yourself or the future. One flag alone may mean little. A cluster that keeps growing is the line to watch.

The second half of the line is spread. A low becomes help time when it starts biting into school, sleep, and friendships. Longer than two weeks, growing worse, or leaking into daily life means it is more than a bad week. Psychologists speak of a disorder only when a lasting pattern breaks daily life and causes real distress.

Try it together

That framing removes blame. A mood disorder is a health problem, not a choice or a weakness. Health problems have treatments that work, which is exactly why reaching out beats waiting it out. A first appointment is deliberately low key. Expect listening and questions about what has been happening, then a plan built with you: talking therapy, daily habits, sometimes medication, often a mix.

Good to know

For a friend in that spot, your part is clear and limited. Ask, listen without judging, and offer to walk with them to help. Their recovery is not yours to carry, and telling a trusted adult is strength, not betrayal. Help sits close by: a trusted adult, a counsellor, or a helpline. Rehearse your first line, then say it.

A low that lasts weeks and spreads into sleep, school, and friendships deserves help, and help starts with one honest talk.
