The lesson

Volcanoes are not all the same. Some could erupt any day. Some are asleep right now but might wake up later. Some will never erupt again. We call these three groups active, dormant, and extinct.

Look at the volcanoes above. Volcano A erupted just 2 years ago, so it is active. It could erupt again soon. Volcano B has been quiet for 80 years, so it is dormant. It is sleeping, but it still has magma underground. Volcano C has been silent for 3,000 years and has no magma left, so it is extinct.

Good to know

A dormant volcano can look just as calm as an extinct one. Do not be fooled. Dormant means the magma is still down there waiting, so scientists keep watching it even after 100 quiet years.

Active could erupt soon, dormant is sleeping but not safe, and extinct will never erupt again.
