The lesson
A volcano eruption is powerful and loud. Lava shoots high into the sky. Ash and smoke can block the sun. The ground shakes and rumbles too.
Before it erupted, Mount St. Helens was round and covered in trees. After it erupted, one whole side of the mountain was gone. Ash covered towns far away.
An eruption can build new land too. Lava cools and turns into hard, black rock. Over time, this rock can form new hills or islands.
Look at pictures from before and after an eruption. You will see how much the land can change.
