Animal Communication
Understand that animals communicate in many different ways — birds sing to attract mates and defend territory, whales call across vast ocean distances, bees dance to show other bees where food is, wolves howl to keep the pack together, and fireflies flash light signals — and that communication is essential for survival
What a learner can do afterwards
- Describes at least 4 different methods of animal communication (sound, dance, light, scent, body language)
- Gives a specific animal example for each method
- Explains that animals communicate to find mates, warn of danger, or share food locations
The lesson
Animals cannot talk with words like people do. But they still need to send messages to each other. They use sound, dance, light, scent, and body language instead. Sending the right message can even help an animal stay alive.
Birds sing in the morning to attract a mate and to tell other birds this spot is taken. Wolves howl to call the rest of the pack back together after a hunt. Whales make deep calls that travel across whole oceans, so a whale far away can still hear them.
Bees do a wiggly waggle dance inside the hive to show other bees which way to fly and how far the flowers are. Fireflies flash their light in a pattern to find a mate in the dark. Ants leave a scent trail on the ground so other ants can follow it straight to food. A dog wags its tail to show it is happy, or bares its teeth to say stay away.
Animals communicate for real reasons: to find a mate, to warn each other about danger, or to share where food is. Next time you hear a bird sing or see a dog wag its tail, you are watching a real message being sent.
Animals send real messages through sound, dance, light, scent, and body language, all to survive.
