Fermentation lets cells run glycolysis with no oxygen by recycling the electron carrier, yielding at most 2 ATP per glucose. Humans farm it: yeast turns grain sugar into beer and bread, and lactic acid bacteria turn milk into yogurt and cheese. The engineering is pure favoritism, since salt, acidity, temperature, and a head start for the starter culture tilt the field so the wanted microbe outgrows every spoiler.
Cleanup borrows the same trick. Oil-eating bacteria already live where oil seeps, so bioremediation feeds them oxygen and nutrients rather than new genes. The limit is always practical: a pollutant locked in rock, toxic at the needed dose, or simply unreachable stays put no matter how willing the microbes are.
Picture your gut as occupied ground. Resident microbes guard it by crowding out newcomers, eating their lunch, and secreting chemical keep-out signs, with no antibodies involved. A broad antibiotic can flatten that guard, which is why secondary infections follow, and reseeding through probiotics or transplants tries to restore it.
Every applied process asks one question: which conditions favour the organism you want over the ones you do not. Tune salt, acid, heat, and head starts toward your champion.
