The lesson

Long ago, scientists pictured dinosaurs as slow, dull-colored reptiles that dragged their tails on the ground. That picture came from the fossils and tools people had at the time. As new fossils turned up and new methods let scientists study bones in finer detail, the picture changed.

Try it together

In the 1990s, fossil hunters in China found dinosaur skeletons with feather traces preserved in the rock. Before that, most scientists pictured dinosaurs as scaly, like lizards. The new fossils showed that many dinosaurs, including close relatives of birds, had feathers. Scientists updated their picture because the evidence demanded it.

Good to know

When two scientists disagree about a fossil, that does not mean one of them is wrong on purpose. They may be reading the same bones in different ways. The stronger explanation is usually the one backed by evidence from many fossils and many studies, not just one opinion.
