What a learner can do afterwards

The lesson

Every dinosaur picture starts with real fossils. Bones and teeth turn to stone easily, so we know a lot about dinosaur shapes and sizes. But skin, feathers, and colour almost never survive. For those parts, artists have to make an informed guess.

For years, Velociraptor was drawn with plain scaly skin, like a lizard. Then scientists found fossils with feather quill marks on close relatives. Now most pictures show Velociraptor covered in feathers.
