Small populations face paired risks that feed each other. Inbreeding weakens the survivors while random drift lets harmful variants fix and useful ones vanish, and each loss of numbers deepens both. A single storm or disease outbreak can erase such a group outright, and extinct genes never return. That is why viability analysis asks what size a population needs to persist.
Splitting habitat costs more than the acres cleared. Roads and fields slice continuous ground into isolated patches with long exposed edges, and edge zones run hotter, drier, and more predator rich than interiors, so small patches may hold no true interior at all. Isolated groups stop exchanging migrants, inbreeding climbs, and recolonisation after local extinction turns impossible.
Picture a reserve drawn as one thin strip versus one round block of the same area. The strip is nearly all edge, with predators and wind reaching everywhere, while the round block keeps a calm interior. Add a corridor of cover joining two blocks, and migrants flow again, carrying fresh genes and recolonists. Area, edge shape, and connection decide together, never area alone.
Argue any reserve layout with three words: large area, round low-edge shape, and corridors that link patches so individuals can move.
