Dimensional Analysis, Scaling and the Order-of-Magnitude Estimate

Before solving anything, the dimensions of the quantities involved fix the form of the answer up to a factor near one. Physicists use that to check results, to guess how a quantity scales, and to decide whether a measurement is worth attempting at all.

Every physical quantity is built from a few basic dimensions: length, mass, and time. That gives you a check before you compute anything. You can only add or compare things with the same dimensions, so adding a length to a time is meaningless and tells you something went wrong. Both sides of an equation must also carry matching dimensions, while pure numbers like one half leave no trace.

Try it together

Energy gets its dimensions from one half m v squared: mass times length squared over time squared. Suppose your algebra hands you an energy with a term that adds meters to seconds. You stop right there, because no later step can rescue a sum of mismatched dimensions. You go back, find the line where the units broke, and fix it before trusting any number.

Before solving anything, you can guess the form of the answer from dimensions alone, up to a factor near one. A Fermi estimate splits the big question into guessable pieces, multiplies them, and states every assumption out loud. The goal is the nearest power of ten, like 10 or 100 or 1000, which is enough to judge whether a plan is possible or a claim can hold. Use such estimates as sanity checks on calculations and proposals, the way you would ask whether equipment fits in a car or how many houses a power plant could serve.

Good to know

For chained conversions, write each factor as a fraction equal to one and cancel units step by step. If the leftover units are wrong, a fraction got flipped, so turn it over and cancel again. Never delete a unit mismatch by hand: it is your calculation telling you where it broke.

Match dimensions on both sides, estimate to the nearest power of ten, and let units expose every flipped fraction.
