Driven Oscillations, Resonance and the Quality Factor
A periodic driving force makes the steady-state amplitude peak when the driving frequency is near the natural one, and the sharpness of that peak is the quality factor. Light damping means a tall narrow peak and a long ring-down.

A driver feeds energy at its own frequency while you answer with your natural one. Plot steady amplitude against driving frequency and the shape tells the story: small far below the natural rate, small far above it, soaring where the two match. That peak is resonance, and damping alone limits how tall it grows. Engineers read that curve like a map of touchy spots.
Damping redraws the peak. Light damping builds a tall narrow spike near resonance, and free swings ring for many cycles with slowly shrinking height. Heavy damping flattens the peak into a wide hump and kills motion fast. Push a swing at the right moment and tiny efforts build huge motion; mistime them and each push fights the last.
The quality factor Q grades the pickiness. High Q means a razor sharp peak plus long lasting free notes, while low Q means a broad lazy hump with quick dying. To drive an oscillator to large amplitude, push at its natural frequency with well timed shoves so every cycle adds energy in step. A lightly damped system pairs its tall peak with a long ring-down for exactly this reason.
Pick your side of the same curve. Wanted: instruments sing at chosen notes and radio tuners grab stations. Unwanted: bridges, buildings, and engines, where designers add damping to spoil the peak. When a bridge hums near its natural frequency, the safe fix is more damping, never harder driving at the peak.
