The lesson
Metals, fossil fuels, and minerals all formed deep inside the Earth over millions of years. We are digging them up far faster than the planet can replace them. That makes each one a finite resource: the amount left keeps shrinking, no matter how big the supply feels right now.
Getting these materials out of the ground is not free. Mining can strip away forests and soil, pollute rivers with waste chemicals, and use huge amounts of water and fuel. Extracting and burning fossil fuels adds more of the gases already building up in the atmosphere.
An aluminium can starts as bauxite ore dug from the ground. Aluminium is a reactive metal, so splitting it from its ore takes a massive electric current, a process called electrolysis. Recycling skips that step entirely: a used can is just melted down and reshaped, using only about 5% of the energy.
Recycling is not free either: cans have to be collected, sorted, and transported. But since it saves so much energy and keeps ore in the ground, that cost is usually worth paying.
Finite resources run out for good, and recycling metals like aluminium saves most of the energy that digging up new ore would need.
