Galaxy Types, the Milky Way's Structure and Active Nuclei
Galaxies sort into spirals, ellipticals and irregulars, and our own is a barred spiral whose shape was worked out from inside it. A small fraction have centres far brighter than all their stars together, powered by accretion onto a massive black hole rather than by fusion.

Galaxies sort into a few broad families, and each type is really a life story. Spirals hold flat rotating discs where young blue stars light up the arms, plus a central bulge of older yellow stars. Ellipticals are smooth roundish balls of old stars with little gas left. Irregulars are messy gas rich systems, often stirred by a collision with a neighbour.
Our Milky Way is a barred spiral about a hundred thousand light years across. Its thin disc holds the Sun, the gas, and most new stars. A long bar of old stars crosses the centre and funnels gas inward. A huge sparse halo of ancient stars and clusters wraps around everything. Young hot stars live in the disc and arms, while old stars pack the bulge and halo.
Nobody has left the disc to photograph our galaxy, yet its shape is mapped. Dust blocks visible light, so astronomers count stars in infrared, trace radio emission from gas, and use distances to thousands of stars to sketch the arms and bar from inside. The arms themselves are not fixed rails: stars drift in and out while the pattern sweeps more slowly, piling gas into traffic jams that burst into new blue stars.
To test a bright galactic centre, check its size against its power. Some centres blaze with more light than all their stars together, fed by gas spiralling into a supermassive black hole. If the glow flickers within days, the engine can be only light days across, far too small for billions of separate stars, so the engine cannot be stellar.
Discs still form stars, dead balls glow old, and a flickering bright centre betrays a feeding black hole.
