Making glucose is not glycolysis run backward. The three irreversible steps cannot reverse under cell conditions, so gluconeogenesis bypasses them with dedicated enzymes such as pyruvate carboxylase and PEP carboxykinase. Those bypasses cost extra energy, and the liver uses this pathway most during fasting to keep blood glucose up without food.
The Cori cycle shows the pathway at work: lactate from hard working muscle returns to the liver for reconversion to glucose. Glycerol and certain amino acids feed in too, each at its own entry point. Fat cannot substitute, because breaking fat yields acetyl CoA, which cannot become net glucose in humans.
Running both directions at full speed would form a futile cycle that burns ATP for no net product. Cells avoid it with reciprocal regulation, where one signal activates one direction and inhibits the other. Fructose 2,6-bisphosphate is the classic switch, stimulating glycolysis while restraining gluconeogenesis. Fast allosteric shifts and slower hormonal changes layer together so the two directions never fight.
When you meet opposing pathways, look for the shared switch and check both directions at once. One signal up on one side means down on the other. If a question asks why separate enzymes exist, answer control: separate enzymes allow separate regulation.
