The lesson
You already know sound is a longitudinal wave. Here is what that looks like up close. When something vibrates, like a guitar string or your vocal cords, it pushes air particles together in some spots and pulls them apart in others. The squeezed spots are called compression. The spread-out spots are called rarefaction. This push-and-pull pattern moves outward through the air and carries the sound to your ear.
In a vacuum, like the empty space between stars, there are no particles at all. With nothing to compress or pull apart, a sound wave can never form. That is why space stays silent no matter how loud an explosion looks in a movie.
Jamal claps once inside an empty gym. The sound wave crosses the room, hits the far wall, and bounces straight back to his ears a moment later, so he hears his clap twice. That is an echo. Ships use the same idea with sonar, sending out a sound wave and timing how long the echo takes to bounce off the ocean floor or a submarine.
Soft things like curtains, carpets, and couches absorb sound energy instead of reflecting it, so a padded room will not echo the way a bare tiled room does. That is why recording studios line their walls with foam panels.
A vibrating object squeezes and stretches nearby particles to send a sound wave outward; the wave needs a medium to travel, echoes off hard surfaces, and fades when soft materials absorb it.
