The lesson

You already know sound travels through the air as vibrations. Those vibrations don't stay the same strength forever. As they travel farther from where they started, they spread out over a bigger space, and each part carries less energy. That's why sound fades the farther away you are from it.

Try it together

Mia claps her hands once. Her friend standing right beside her hears a loud, sharp clap. Another friend standing far across the playground hears the very same clap, but it sounds soft and faint. The clap didn't change. It's the same vibrations, just weaker by the time they reach the far-away friend's ears.

Good to know

Next time you're outside, ask a friend to walk away from you while talking normally. Notice how their voice fades the farther they go. That's not your hearing failing, it's the sound vibrations spreading out and losing strength.

Sound doesn't disappear with distance, it just spreads out, loses strength, and gets fainter the farther away you are from it.
