The lesson

Your body has two ways to fight germs. Innate immunity is your fast team. It includes your skin, mucus, and inflammation, and it attacks any germ the same way, right away. Adaptive immunity is slower to start, but it targets one exact germ and remembers it for next time.

Adaptive immunity has two main fighters. B cells make antibodies, proteins shaped to lock onto one specific antigen on a germ, marking it for destruction. T cells patrol your body and destroy cells that are already infected, stopping the germ from spreading further.

This time, memory B and T cells from that first infection recognized the virus instantly and destroyed it before it could make her sick.
