A vaccine puts a harmless form of a pathogen into your body, such as a weakened germ or a fragment of one. It cannot cause the illness, but it trains your immune system to build matching antibodies. On the second meeting the response is so fast that you never feel ill.

High vaccination rates protect even people who cannot be vaccinated, such as newborn babies. When most people are immune, outbreaks starve for lack of new hosts. This shield is called herd immunity.

Antibiotics kill bacteria and do nothing to viruses, so colds need rest, not pills. Resistance evolves by selection: each course kills the weaker bacteria and spares rare resistant mutants, which then multiply. Finishing every course, never sharing pills and vaccinating all slow this down.

Good to know

Remember where resistance lives: in the bacteria, never in the person. A person does not become immune to the drug. The bacterial population changes because the drug killed all but the resistant ones.

Vaccines train immunity safely, and careful antibiotic use stops resistant bacteria taking over.
