Antibody Diversity, Memory and What Tolerance Failure Costs
A limited set of gene segments is rearranged and mutated to give an enormous range of antibodies, and the cells that bind best are selected and kept. Memory explains why a second exposure is faster and stronger, and failures of tolerance explain autoimmunity and allergy.

Your body builds an enormous antibody range from a small parts box. In developing B cells, an enzyme called DNA recombinase cuts and pastes gene segments, for example one V segment joined to one J segment in the light chain. Mixing about 300 such segments, plus mutation, yields up to 100 trillion different B cell clones. Each clone carries one unique binding site.
B cells mature in the bone marrow, and tolerance is installed there too. Clones that grip self strongly are deleted by apoptosis, and some are switched off in a state called anergy. Mature cells that meet self later without helper T cell signals die as well, so T cell control backs up the whole filter.
Picture your first and second meeting with the same virus. The first response is slow: plasma cells first release IgM, the early class, and only later comes strong IgG. Memory B cells stay behind, so the second meeting is faster, larger, and better binding, with big IgG quantities. That memory is why re-exposure feels so different from the first infection.
When tolerance fails in a specific way, name the failure. Attack on self is autoimmunity. An IgE response to a harmless speck such as ragweed pollen, with mast cells spilling histamine, is allergy.
Shuffled gene segments make endless antibodies, memory makes the second response faster, and tolerance failures have specific names.
