What a learner can do afterwards

The lesson

You already know inherited traits pass from parents to their offspring. A puppy's fur color comes from its mom and dad. A sunflower grows into a sunflower because of its parent plant. But look closely at brothers, sisters, or plants from the same seed packet. They share inherited traits, yet no two look exactly the same.

Try it together

Four kittens are born to the same mom and dad cat. All four inherited orange fur, so they all look orange. But one kitten is bigger than the others, and one has a small white patch on its paw. Same parents, same inherited trait, still some differences.

Good to know

Variation is normal. It does not mean a trait failed to pass down. Living things from the same parents can still be different sizes, colors, or shapes.

Offspring inherit traits from their parents, but every individual still shows its own natural variation.
