Land Plants: Vascular Tissue and a Life Cycle That Alternates

Every land plant alternates two generations. The gametophyte is haploid and makes gametes, while the sporophyte is diploid and makes spores. A spore grows into a gametophyte, gametes join at fertilisation, and the result grows into a sporophyte again.
In mosses the green carpet you see is the gametophyte, and the thin stalk on top is the dependent sporophyte. In ferns, pines, and flowering plants the balance flips: the big plant is the sporophyte, and the gametophyte shrinks to a few cells tucked inside.
Land demanded new plumbing and protection. Vascular tissue pipes water and sugars around the body, letting plants stand tall and compete for light. Seeds pack a diploid embryo with food and a protective coat, and pollen carries sperm without surface water, so the two together freed reproduction from ponds.
Mosses and ferns still pay the old water price: their sperm must swim, so they reproduce only where surfaces stay moist. Seeds and pollen are the receipt for escaping that limit.
Two generations take turns, the noticeable one changes across groups, and plumbing plus seeds solved life on land.
