The lesson
A star's life starts inside a nebula, a huge cloud of gas and dust floating in space. Gravity slowly pulls the gas together into a clump called a protostar. When the protostar gets hot and dense enough, nuclear fusion switches on in its core, and a true star is born. For most of its life, a star like the Sun sits in a stable stage called the main sequence, fusing hydrogen into helium and giving off light and heat.
Every star starts the same way, but its ending depends on its mass. A star like the Sun eventually swells into a red giant, then puffs its outer layers into space and leaves behind a small, dense core called a white dwarf. A star many times more massive than the Sun burns through its fuel much faster. When its core finally collapses, the star explodes in a supernova. What is left behind is either a neutron star or, for the most massive stars, a black hole.
The iron in your blood did not come from Earth alone. Massive stars fuse lighter elements into heavier ones, like carbon, oxygen, and iron, deep in their cores. When one of those stars explodes as a supernova, it scatters those elements across space. Billions of years later, some of that material became part of the Sun, the Earth, and you.
