Red-Shift and the Expanding Universe
Light from distant galaxies arrives with its lines shifted towards longer wavelengths, and the shift is bigger the further away the galaxy is. The straightforward reading is that space itself is expanding from a hot, dense start.

Galaxies send us light marked with a barcode of dark lines, and in distant galaxies that whole barcode sits shifted toward the red end. Longer wavelength means the source is rushing away, the same logic as a siren dropping pitch as it passes. Hubble found the pattern: the farther the galaxy, the bigger the shift.
A century ago nobody knew other galaxies existed, and the Milky Way was thought to be everything. Then astronomers proved those fuzzy spirals were separate island universes millions of light years out. Once galaxies had distances, their red-shifted light became a story about the whole universe moving.
Zoe rewinds the film in her head. If space is expanding now, running it backward squeezes everything into a hot dense start. Its afterglow still bathes us as faint microwaves from every direction, a second witness that never met Hubble. Two independent lines point at the same hot beginning.
One observation alone could be a fluke of dust or motion, so textbooks demand backup. When two independent witnesses agree, the case hardens. Learn to ask for the second line of evidence before calling any big idea settled.
