What a learner can do afterwards

The lesson

Scientists do not guess when they measure. They pick the right tool, read it carefully, and follow the same steps every time. Doing it the same way each time is called a systematic method.

This ruler goes from 0 to 10 centimetres (cm). The pencil ends at the 7, so it is 7 cm long.

A thermometer measures temperature in degrees Celsius (°C). Wait until the line stops moving, then read the number it lines up with. Do not read it too soon.

Try it together

Sam checks the temperature outside at 9am, 12pm, and 3pm, using the same thermometer each time. She writes down each number right after reading it. Her chart for one day shows 14°C, 19°C, and 17°C.

Good to know

Pick the right tool for the job: a ruler for length in cm, a thermometer for temperature in °C, a measuring jug for liquid in ml, and scales for mass in g. Always read to the closest line, not a guess.
