Nanoparticles and Why Surface Area Changes Everything
Cut a lump into small enough pieces and the fraction of atoms sitting on a surface stops being negligible. That single geometric fact is why a nanoparticle can catalyse, absorb light or pass through a membrane in ways the bulk material never does, and it is also the reason for caution about them.

A nanoparticle measures between 1 and 100 nanometres across. At that size almost every atom sits on the surface, ready to react, instead of hiding inside. That is why gold dust glows red, silver kills bacteria, and sunscreen titanium dioxide blocks UV while staying invisible. Same stuff, new behaviour, all from geometry.
You can prove the geometry with cubes. A 3 cm cube has surface 54 and volume 27, a ratio of 2 per cm. Slice it into twenty seven 1 cm cubes and the total surface triples to 162 while volume stays 27, so the ratio jumps to 6 per cm. A 2 cm cube has surface 24 and volume 8, ratio 3 per cm, and cutting it into eight 1 cm cubes doubles total surface to 48, ratio 6 per cm.
Factories now engineer size as carefully as composition. The huge surface per gram makes nanoparticles fiercely reactive, which suits catalysts, drug delivery and coatings. In the lab you can watch colour shift as particle size changes, because properties that depend on surface suddenly dominate the whole sample.
Never assume bulk safety data covers the nano form. Nanoparticles can slip into cells and lungs the way gases do, which bulk lumps cannot. That is the exam reason for testing them separately: new size, new route into the body, new harm to check.
