Rainforests grow more plants than almost anywhere else on Earth. You would expect the soil under all that green to be thick and rich. It is not. Rainforest soil is actually thin and poor in nutrients.
So where did the nutrients go? They are not sitting in the dirt. They are locked inside the living things above ground: the trees, the vines, the animals, and the fungi.
A farmer clears a patch of rainforest to plant crops. The first year, the crops grow well. But each year after, they grow weaker. Once the trees are gone, nothing is left to catch the nutrients, so rain washes them away.
Rainforest nutrients are never stored for long. They keep moving, passing quickly from dead material back into living roots.
Rainforest soil looks like it should be rich, but it is thin and poor, because nutrients stay locked in living things and cycle fast instead of building up in the ground.
