The lesson
A food web shows who eats whom in the rainforest. Energy starts with the sun, moves into plants, then into the animals that eat plants, and then into the animals that eat those animals.
Zara traces a food chain in the rainforest. A Brazil nut tree grows fruit using sunlight. A monkey eats the fruit. A jaguar creeps through the shadows and hunts the monkey. Energy moves from tree to monkey to jaguar.
When a plant or animal dies, it does not just disappear. Decomposers, like fungi and tiny insects, break the dead material into simple nutrients. Rain washes those nutrients into the soil, where tree roots soak them up again.
Three words help you remember the food web: a producer makes its own food, a consumer eats other living things, and a decomposer breaks down dead material.
Energy flows from producer to consumer, and decomposers recycle everything that is left back into the soil for new plants to use.
