The lesson
The Arctic and the Antarctic are both frozen and both far from the equator, but their ecosystems work in very different ways. The Arctic is an ocean surrounded by land, so it has icy tundra as well as sea. The Antarctic is the opposite: a frozen continent surrounded entirely by ocean, and almost all of its life depends on that ocean.
Selin is comparing photos from both poles for a school project. In her Arctic photos she sees a herd of caribou, an arctic fox, and a small village where people have lived for generations. In her Antarctic photos she sees ice, ocean, and penguins, but no houses and no land animals at all. Antarctica has too little food or shelter on land to support people or land mammals living there year-round; only scientists visit for short stays.
Because these food chains are so short, one weak link can shake the whole chain. If sea ice melts and krill numbers drop, animals all the way up to whales and polar bears feel it fast. That is why both poles are watched so closely as the climate changes.
