The lesson
You already know about polar bears and other polar animals living in a very cold, icy place. To survive there, these animals have special adaptations. An adaptation is a feature that helps an animal live in its environment.
Seals and whales swim in freezing ocean water all day. Under their skin, they have a thick layer of fat called blubber. Blubber works like a warm coat that never comes off, so their body heat stays in instead of escaping into the cold water.
You already know that polar bears have thick white fur. Each hair is actually hollow, like a tiny straw, with air trapped inside. That trapped air works like a blanket and holds the bear's body heat in, even in freezing wind.
Cold-weather adaptations come in many forms. Arctic foxes grow a thick white coat every winter. It keeps them warm and helps them hide in the snow. Some animals skip the hardest months by migrating, or traveling, to warmer places until spring comes back.
Polar animals stay warm in freezing cold through many different adaptations: blubber, hollow fur, heat-saving blood flow, white coats, and migration.
