The lesson

You already know that insects like bees carry pollen from flower to flower so plants can make seeds. Here's why that matters at breakfast: a huge share of the fruits, nuts, and vegetables you eat only grow because an insect visited their flowers first.

Almonds and apples barely grow without bee visits. Wheat makes seeds using wind, so it doesn't need insects at all.
Try it together

Almond trees in California flower for only a few weeks each spring. There aren't enough wild bees nearby to visit every blossom, so growers truck in millions of honeybee hives just for that short window. Without those bees, most blossoms would never become almonds.

Good to know

If you want to guess which foods might get scarce first when bees decline, ask: could this plant make its fruit or seed without an insect visit? If the answer is no, that food is at risk.

Many fruits, nuts, and vegetables only form after an insect carries pollen to their flowers, so fewer bees can mean less of that food on the shelf.
