Reading a Rock Sequence: Superposition, Fossils and Correlation

A cliff face is a sequence of events in order, and a few simple rules put them in that order without any dates at all. Fossils then let sequences in different places be matched, which is how a regional history is assembled from scattered outcrops.

Sediment piles youngest on top and oldest at the bottom. That rule is superposition, and it turns a cliff into a timeline you read from the bottom up. A canyon wall works the same way: seas that came and went, deserts that left dunes, each layer with its own colour and grain. Order the stack first, then place every other event into it.

Two more rules fix the order. Anything that cuts through layers is younger than what it cuts, so faults and intrusions come later, and baked rock beside an intrusion marks the contact. And any chunk of one rock trapped inside another, an inclusion, is older than its host. Put superposition, cross-cutting, and inclusions together and nearly any drawn section falls into order.

Try it together

Fossils let two far apart cliffs share one clock. When the same species appears in both, the layers match in age, which is called correlation. The best markers are index fossils: species that lived a short span yet spread over a wide area. That combo makes a match you can trust.

Good to know

Watch for the gap that hides. Sometimes erosion scraped rock away before new sediment buried the surface, leaving an unconformity: time with no record. It is easy to miss because beds above and below can look neatly parallel. Spot the uneven buried surface and you recover the missing chapter.
