Scientific knowledge is provisional — it is the best current explanation based on available evidence, and it can and should be revised when better evidence arrives
What a learner can do afterwards
- Give an example of a scientific idea that changed when new evidence was found — e.g. people once thought the Sun orbited the Earth
- Explain that scientists update their ideas when experiments give unexpected results, and that this is a strength not a weakness
- Describe why it is important to keep testing ideas rather than just accepting them because an expert said so
The lesson
Scientists build their ideas from the evidence they have gathered so far. That means even a widely accepted idea is really our best explanation right now, not a fact carved in stone forever. When new evidence comes in, a good scientist changes the idea to fit it.
For a long time, people looked at the sky and thought the Sun circled the Earth, since that is what it looks like every day. When scientists studied the sky more closely, with telescopes and careful measurements, they found evidence that the Earth actually circles the Sun. Scientists changed the idea to match what the evidence showed.
If an experiment gives you a surprising result, that is not something to hide. It is a clue that your idea might need updating, and that is exactly how science moves forward.
