The lesson
A seed looks like it is doing nothing, but it is not asleep. Give it water and warmth, and it wakes up. First it soaks up water. Then a tiny root pushes down into the soil. After that, a shoot pushes up toward the light, and finally leaves open up to catch the sun.
A bulb starts differently. It already has food packed inside it, like a lunch box for the plant. So a bulb can send up a shoot quickly, without growing a root first the way a seed does.
Every day, Amir drew a picture of his bean plant in a notebook. On day 2 he drew a tiny root. On day 5 he drew a shoot poking out of the soil. On day 9 he drew two little leaves. His diary told the whole story of how the plant grew.
Keep your seed or bulb a little damp, not soaking wet, and check it at the same time each day. Small changes are easier to spot if you look often.
