Sleep, Circadian Rhythms and the Clock in the Brain

A clock built from a gene loop inside single cells runs near a day, and light resets it through a dedicated pathway from the retina. Sleep itself is a sequence of states with distinct electrical signatures, and what is lost when it is disrupted is a way of testing what those states are for.

Deep in your brain sits a small cluster of cells called the SCN. Inside each cell, clock genes make proteins that pile up and switch their own genes off. As the proteins break down, the genes switch back on. That loop takes close to 24 hours, so one cell alone keeps near daily time. Cells in a dish still fire on that rhythm, and a transplanted SCN hands its rhythm to its new owner.

Your clock runs on its own, but light sets it to the real day. A special set of retinal cells senses overall brightness and signals the SCN on its own pathway. It is separate from the pathway you use to see shapes and faces. Morning light moves the clock earlier and evening light moves it later.

Across the night you cycle through lighter and deeper stages, each with its own brain wave pattern, including REM where most vivid dreaming happens. Short or shifted sleep builds a debt you pay with poorer attention, learning, mood, and health. That pattern of loss is how scientists test what each stage is for.

Good to know

When sleep breaks, ask which part broke. A bedtime that slides later each day points at a lost light to clock signal. Dream pieces leaking into the day point at the sleep switch itself. Timed bright light or timely melatonin can retune a mistimed clock.
