The lesson

The sun is a star, just like every dot of light in the night sky. It looks huge and blazing bright for one simple reason: it sits far closer to Earth than any other star. Most other stars only look like tiny points, even though many of them are actually bigger than the sun.

Try it together

Leo holds a torch right next to his face and it looks blinding. Then he walks far across a dark field and turns it on again. From that distance, the same torch looks like a tiny dim dot. Nothing changed about the torch itself, only the distance.

Good to know

Don't assume the brightest star is the biggest one. A small star can look bright just by being close, and a giant star can look faint if it sits extremely far away. Distance usually explains the difference more than size does.

The sun looks brightest because it is the closest star to Earth, and the same distance rule explains why other stars vary in brightness.
