The lesson

You know the Sun is a star. So why does it look far bigger and brighter than every other star in the night sky? It is not because the Sun is the biggest or the brightest star that exists. It is because the Sun is the closest star to Earth. Every other star you see is trillions of kilometers farther away.

The giant star actually makes far more light than the Sun. From Earth, though, the Sun still looks brighter because it sits so much closer to us.
Try it together

Picture a flashlight held right next to your face. It looks very bright, maybe even hard to look at. Now picture a huge stadium floodlight far across a field. The floodlight is much more powerful, but from where you stand it looks smaller and dimmer. The Sun is like that close flashlight. The other stars are like that distant floodlight.

Good to know

Remember two different words. Apparent brightness is how bright something looks to you. Actual brightness is how much light it truly gives off. Distance can make something with less actual brightness look apparently brighter.

The Sun looks brightest simply because it is closest to Earth, not because it is the biggest or most powerful star out there.
