Pioneer species change a bare habitat until it suits other species better, and each stage is replaced by the next. Conservation often means holding succession back rather than letting it run.

Lichens and mosses crust bare rock first. These pioneers trap dust, crack stone with acids, and rot into thin soil. Grasses follow, then shrubs, then trees, each wave suiting its successor better than itself.
Pioneers need light and bare ground, so their own shade and leaf litter doom their seedlings. Later species tolerate shade young and grow tall to claim the light. Diversity and biomass climb at every stage.
The march can end in oak woodland that replaces itself unless disturbed. Fire, storms, or farming can rewind the sequence to an earlier stage. Grazing, burning, or mowing can freeze it as moorland or meadow.
Check for soil to name the type: primary succession starts with no soil on rock or lava, while secondary restarts where soil survives, such as after fire. Deflected succession means people hold it off course on purpose.
Pioneers build soil that favours their replacements, diversity rises, and people can rewind the march or hold it back.
